Butte Head Start Overview

Butte Head Start promotes school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of low-income children through the provision of health, educational, nutritional, social and other services that are determined to be necessary.

Parent involvement in their child's education and development, setting and meeting family goals and program planning are a critical part of the program.

Our Mission Statement

Head Start will become a role model, which strengthens the partnership between families, staff and community by providing a comprehensive program with emphasis on education, social services, health/nutrition and parent involvement.

  "Celebrate Childhood"

Creative Curriculum

The Creative Curriculum is a rich environmental program that is well planned and orchestrated for children 3-5 year olds. Children have an opportunity to explore, invent, problem solve and create using a hands on approach to ensure a stimulating environment.

The curriculum is supplemented with the Good Talking Words Social Skill Program, The Kelly Bear Preschool Drug Prevention Program and Talking about Touch Personal Safety Program. All of these programs are focused on preschool and implement the learning of good life skills. The programs are skill based to encourage empathy, problem solving, expressing oneself in a positive way and dealing with difficult situations and are practiced and talked about in the individual lessons. Our curriculum is well rounded and interesting for children plus it offers parental education and activities that can be completed at home.

Education Options

Center Base Option: Enrolled children for the center base program attends class four days a week (Monday - Thursday) from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Currently we have 11 classrooms located in Silverbow county and 1 classroom in Beaverhead county.

Full Day/Full Year Option: The Child Care Advocate from the Head Start Center will come directly into the qualified child care locations to provide a school environment with the comfort of the child care setting. The child care facility and teacher/provider must meet Head Start guidelines, ie: cognitive, social, emotional, physical and nutritional needs to participate in the program. Home Based Option: A Home Base teacher will visit you in your home once a week to do fun activities with you and your child. You can talk with the teacher about discipline, child development, social skills, and health and parent information. Our goal is to work with families in order to enrich the lives of their children in such a way that they will feel good about themselves and be better prepared to succeed in school. Home Base is available in Beaverhead and Madison counties.

What happens in Home Base Head Start? The teacher will visit you and your child on day per week for about one and a half hours. During this time you and the teacher will spend one hour teaching your child and introducing, reinforcing, and developing skills that you have deemed important and have discussed with the teacher. Children receive all of the services that the students in the Head Start Center receive.
